About Fly.io

Fast-starting VMs, placed in regions near your users, Tokyo included.

Fly.io runs apps on Fly Machines, hardware-isolated Linux virtual machines that you control through a REST API or the fly command, and fly launch sets up an app from your project. A stopped Machine starts again quickly (the docs say usually well under a second), and Machines can be stopped and started automatically based on traffic. You choose the regions an app runs in, and Managed Postgres is offered in many of them. Machines are billed by the second while running, and stopped Machines only for their root file system. New organizations have no free tier: there is a short trial that needs no card, after which a card is required.

Characteristics

  • Fly Machines: VMs controlled through a REST API or flyctl
  • Automatic stop and start based on traffic
  • Choose regions per app, with Managed Postgres in many of them
  • Per-second billing for running Machines
  • Volumes, networking and Fly Kubernetes
