About GitHub Pages

Publish a static site straight from a GitHub repository.

GitHub Pages is GitHub’s static site hosting: it publishes the HTML, CSS and JavaScript in a repository at a github.io address or a custom domain. You can publish from a branch (the root or a /docs folder, built with Jekyll by default) or with a GitHub Actions workflow that runs any other build. Each account gets one user or organization site and each repository one project site, and on GitHub Free the repository must be public. GitHub says Pages isn’t allowed for running an online business, e-commerce or commercial software as a service, and its usage limits are soft limits that can lead GitHub to contact you or stop serving the site. Visitors’ IP addresses are logged for security purposes.

Characteristics

  • Publish from a branch, or build and deploy with a GitHub Actions workflow
  • Jekyll builds by default; workflow templates for other builds
  • A github.io address or a custom domain
  • One user or organization site per account, one project site per repository
