About Heroku

Deploy with git push; attach databases and other services as add-ons.

Heroku is a platform as a service where you deploy by running git push to the heroku remote. Buildpacks turn your code, dependencies and language runtime into a build, which runs in dynos according to the process types declared in a Procfile. Configuration lives in config vars, databases and queues are attached as add-ons, and every release is recorded so you can roll back. Heroku ended its free dynos and free Heroku Postgres and Redis plans on November 28, 2022, and Eco web dynos, the entry tier, sleep after a period without traffic.

Characteristics

  • Deploy with git push; buildpacks are open source
  • Process types from a Procfile, scaled as dynos
  • Add-ons for databases, queues and other services
  • Releases are recorded and can be rolled back
